Magnesium is the third most abundant ion in seawater, surpassed only by sodium and chloride. Its abundance is critical in the formation of weak ion pairs with carbonate ions. This allows calcium and carbonate ions to be available for uptake by corals and invertebrates. Low levels of magnesium lead to low or unstable levels of calcium and alkalinity. Signs of lowmagnesium levels include precipitation of calcium as insoluble calcium carbonate and impaired inhabitant growth and health.

The HI783 Marine Magnesium Checker HC is a handheld colorimeter that uses the Beer- Lambert principle to determine the concentration of magnesium colorimetrically. The HI783 is designed specifically to measure magnesium levels in a saltwater aquarium or in marine biology applications. The 1000 to 1800 ppm range is ideal for coral/fish or fish-only aquarium maintenance.

Ideal for aquariums and marine biology
Easier to use and more accurate than chemical test kits
Small size, big convenience

UPDATE VERSION with powder and liquid reagent.

Blinks 1800

After testing 4 different times in as many days, it just blinks 1800. Salifert test says 1420. After reading reviews, it would seem im not the only one with this issue. This is one Hanna checker I'd not bother with.

The Hanna Instruments HI-783 Magnesium Checker blinking '1800' typically indicates that the reading is out of range or an error occurred during testing. Here are a few common reasons and troubleshooting steps:

Possible Causes:

Sample Contamination – Ensure the cuvette is completely clean and free of fingerprints, residue, or bubbles.

Reagent Issues – Expired or improperly stored reagents can cause inaccurate readings. Make sure the reagent is fresh and well-mixed.

Improper Mixing – Follow the test steps precisely, especially regarding shaking/mixing the reagents.

Calibration Issue – If the zeroing step (with deionized water) isn’t done correctly, the test may not work properly.

High Magnesium Levels – If your magnesium levels are too high (above 1800 ppm), the checker may not be able to read it correctly.

User Errors – Ensure each step of the test is followed exactly as per the manual, including waiting times.

What You Can Do:

Try running the test with a different water sample (like freshly mixed saltwater) to see if you get a reasonable reading.

Contact us (support@reefsupplies) or Hanna Canada Instruments' customer support if the issue persists.
