Testing and monitoring salinity in saltwater aquariums is an ongoing task. The HI981520 is an easy-to-use vertical mount unit that continuously monitors and displays conductivity and pH.

he system can be calibrated at one or two points for pH and at one point for conductivity. Seawater salinity is expressed in either parts per thousand (ppt), Practical Salinity Units (PSU), or Specific Gravity (S.G.). A high/low alarm can be configured for each parameter and the results are displayed on a large, easy-to-read LCD.

The attached two-electrode conductivity probe features a built-in temperature sensor for rapid, high-accuracy temperature readings.

The Hanna HI1286 pH double junction, gel-filled pH electrode features a PEI resin body that is easy to clean and resistant to many aggressive chemicals. Additionally, the double junction design is less susceptible to clogging for fast and stable readings.

  • Two Alarm operating modes (High/Low Value) for each supported parameter
  • High/Low Alarm generated when measured value exceeds or drops below configured parameter High/Low Value
  • Acoustic signal generated each time an alarm is triggered
  • All readings are compensated for variations in temperature
  • Temperature is displayed in °C or °F along with pH and EC readings
  • The EC probe contains an integral temperature sensor that simplifies installation
  • Easy to read LCD display

pH Range 0.0 to 14.0 pH

Conductivity ppt Range 0.0 to 70.0 ppt

Temperature Range 0.0 to 50.0 °C (32.0 to 122.0 °F)

very good idea but not same Hannah's accuracy/consistency as Hannah's other products

My hope for this product were very high but I am very disappointed.

I bought this item exactly a year ago. and since day 1, the accuracy was a problem. I tried countless time and used tons of sachets of calibration solution ($$$) to try calibrate both probes. It was always off. E.g. salinity always been off by a bit more than +1 ppt (real = 35.1; monitor showed 36.4). PH was even worst (real = 8.2; monitor showed 7.6). I caused false positives and I was keep trying to adjust the parameters of my tank for nothing… I compared the readings with Hanna’s other checkers (which I loved a lot and only need to be calibrated once/6 months!): Marine Salinity Tester HI98319 and PH Checker HI98103. For the price, the accuracy should be a lot better IMO.
I tried to contact Hanna and their response was:

Hi Pascal,
This difference is not alarming, the HI 981520 has an accuracy of +/- 1.0ppt which for a reading of 33.4 could range from 32.4 to 34.4.
If you compare to the HI 98319 the accuracy is also +/- 1ppt so for a reading of 34.2 reading could range from 33.2 to 35.2.
Both then fall within specifications.

The instrument is meant for continuous use, but we need maintenance on a regular basis to ensure the sensors keep reading accurately.
Deposits on the salinity probe can interfere and deposits and contamination thru the pH porous junction, for the pH electrode, can cause premature deterioration.
See the HI 981520 manual p18 for more maintenance and care info.
